UoH Lecturer Participates in an International Conference In Budapest

Mr. Awara Hussain Ahmed, a Law department of Halabja university lecturer participated in the 1st International Conference on Nations under Genocide from the 19th to 21st of April, 2017 in Budapest.

Mr. Ahmed, formerly officially invited by the Pázmány Péter Catholic university to attend the conference, presented a twenty-minute legal speech on “The Genocide of Kurds and The United Nations’ Stance”.

He shed some light on the history of suppression, division and mass murdering of Kurds by Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria - the four countries among which the nation is divided. Even though they are members of the United Nations’ Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, they have carried out genocide against Kurds throughout history.

He further criticized the United Nations for not taking immediate effective preventative action against the genocide of Kurds in 1988 by the Iraqi’s former dictatorship regime.

He also mentioned the chemical attack of Halabja and its traumatic and long-term toxic effects on the citizens of the city.

Lastly in his speech, Mr. Ahmed insisted that the attendants put pressure on their respective parliaments to internationally recognize the genocide of Kurds.

The 1st International Conference on Nations under Genocide lasted for three days and provided a unique opportunity for the academics from other massacred nations such as Israel, Hungary, Armenia, and Germany to relate issues of genocide and crimes against humanity.

Other key members from Kurdistan to attend the conference were the two rectors of the University of Salahadden and the International University of Erbil and a few of their lecturers.
